What a wonderful museum. A great selection of planes (in great condition) and armament that is nicely laid out and easy to get around. Only SR-71 with the extended tail section. I have been here several times and will keep coming back when I am in the area. I recommend a visit if you get the chance.

I really enjoyed my recent visit to the USAF Armament Museum. I really enjoyed seeing the B47H Bomber. I was a crew chief and flew on the B47H Bombers when I was stationed at Forbes AFB, Kansas.I was in the 38th SRS of the 55th SRW and spent four months in Thule AFB, Greenland with my B47H. I also got to see the F4 Phantom and F101 Voodoo Fighters that I worked on at McDonnell Aircraft after leaving the Air Force. The Musuem was well worth the drive to EglinAFB.

I was pleasantly surprised by the number of aircraft on display and the quality of the exhibits. The museum's collection includes ~35 aircraft including a B-52, SR-71, B-17G, B-25, AC-130A (which is the very first production C-130 made), B-47, etc. Numerous indoor displays document the history of hte armament development of the Air Force. Plan on spending about 4 hours or so to go through the museum (more time if you want to read all the displays in detail). All in all, it was a great way to spend an afternoon with my family while on vacation in Florida. They are planning on expanding the museum with another building in the near future, so donations were welcome.

According to www.carriagehills.com/info_eglin.htm "Eglin's historic can be traced to James E. Plew, a wealthy man from Chicago, Illinois. In 1922 he settled in Valparaiso and built an inn, a golf course, a bank and a winery. Occasionally, military planes from Maxwell Field, Alabama would land on Plew's golf course so the pilots could enjoy golfing and fishing in the area. After a suggestion from Lt. Arnold H. Rich, a visiting officer of the U.S. Army Air Corps to create an aviation base and a bombing and gunnery range for Maxwell Field's Tactical School, Mr. Plew built two runways on his land by, July, 1933. Named Valparaiso Airport, this landing strip was offered to the commanding officer of Maxwell Field by the city of Valparaiso." The museum is exceptional! Many aircraft, missiles, bombs, guns.

Does anyone know what Eglin was before it was a base. I mean was it just swamp, was there buildings there. How can I find out what it was. This is very important.

June 2006 I completed a 3000 mile aviation trip spanning 5 states and 13 aviation museums. The USAF Armament Museum will always remain on my must see list of aviation museums. The outside displays are really great because of their well maintained status and they are great for photography because the aircraft are not space too close. This allows each aircraft to be photographed independently. The inside displays are also great. I enjoyed myself very much and will return soon. Thanks for making my trip well worth my time and efforts, I only took 160 pictures. Anyone who has an interest in aviation needs to visit this museum. Thanks

In 1974 or 05 it was awesome to see. I am one of the lucky ones to haul one of the exibits to the museum. It was one of the first exibits the museum had. I was in the 3201 Trans Sq. main base Eglin. It is one of my wishs to return to Eglin and view the Museum again. Then Sgt. Grossman
