Some very interesting and historic military aircraft -- but you can only see them at a great distance, through a steel picket fence. Not open to the public, it's on the grounds of McConnell Air Force Base. It's NOT a museum -- just a handful of military jets on pedestals, in a tiny park. You can only see it once a year, on the weekend that McConnell AFB has its open house. Neither open to the public, nor a museum.

I am looking forward to visiting the Kansas Aviation Museum. I moved to Wichita in May of 2006 from Costa Mesa, California. My dad was a private pilot. I have good memories of flying with him and building model airplanes as a child. I am proud to say I now live in Wichita, Kansas, USA! The Aviation Air Capital of the World!!! Take care, Mark Howard

I just got off the phone with McConnell Air Base, and this is not accesible to the public you have to have special access to the base. So disappointing. Go to the Kansas Aviation Museum instead and yell profanities at the base for not having the aircraft viewable by the public!

So can I see these aircraft if I drive over to the west side of the air base, or am I going to be arrested for trespassing? I would like to know as I am a big fan of the F-86 Saber and would like to see it on display. What about the B-47 Stratojet, is it accessible for pictures as well?

Evidently no one is screening these postings, as the one from David Parker, Wichita, KS, doesn't know what he is talking about! The Kansas Aviation Museum has a section set up "SPECIFICALLY" for children to learn about early aviation history! And, ANYONE stupid enough to take a child into a museum, or anywhere in public, and just let them run around, well, I'll reserve those comments; but that just shouldn't be. As for the two aircraft on the active duty, or east side of the base, the KC-135, "Stratotanker," tail number 55-3118, and the B-47 "Strato-jet," are NOT in a refueling position. The KC- has its nose gear off the ground, which is rarely done (the Vomit Comet, at Ellington AFB, TX, is mounted this way), but these two a/c are NOT positioned for refueling. There is also an F-105 "Thunderjet," or "Thud," on the east side. I would encourage those who like to do postings like this to research what they are writing about, before they grab hold a keyboard and start pecking at keys, and leading people astray, and speaking poorly about buildings and agencies for which they have little or NO knowledge of. Since we are in the United States of America, you (the reader) can take David's comments as opinion, which he is entitled to; but please do not mistake his posting as that of one coming from a professional. Please...thank you. Go visit the many wonderful organizations in Wichita, and learn all that you can about aviation history...the city is full of it. Oh, and, if you are a parent...take the kids; and watch them closely. Most of the historical activities are geared toward them...don't leave home without them. Blessings, R. Brown

The F-100 will be painted within the next two weeks. The others are done. I hope you can drive by and see the history and the work that has been done.

Just a quick update. We are in the process of repainting the T-33 and F-84C Both have been sanded and will hopefully be in for repaint within the next 2 weeks (June 15, 2006) The F-84 was never really done up nice so it will recieve the most attention. Stop by in a month or so and they should be back on thier circles.

You need to go by and see the newest addition a B-1B bomber is really a sight to see. Plus on the other side of McConnell, AFB the first ever built KC-135 is located right behind the B-47. Don't miss the Avaition Museum of Kansas located at the West gate of McConnell. AFB. They have A B-52, Boeing 727, Beech Starship, and a host of other aircraft that you can view outside plus a good number of artifacts as well as a Steerman under restoration inside the old Wichita Airport Building that dates back to the beginning of avaition located here in Wichita.
