Ed Adams Diboll, Texas | I was in the back yard doing some garden work when I hear a different sounding aircraft leaving the Lufkin, Texas airport that is right behind my house. I looked up and saw this beautiful P38 just above the trees. So I went to the airport to inquire about it. An employee there told me it was Glacier Girl. I was so disappointed that I missed seeing it on the ground. If only I had known it was there. I would have loved to have been able to at least touch it. I used to watch P38's practice dogfighting over the farm in Pennsylvania when I was a kid. 07/30/2008 @ 06:07 [ref: 8291] |
kathy Taylor berea, Kentucky | I am looking for any information and especially pictures of Bill Taylor who flew in/out of the Middlesboro airport for years....40's,50's and 60's. He also was a flight instruction and taught many to fly. He taught a lady named Evelyn Johnson to fly who later became a famous pilot. Any information would be greatly appreiated. 02/06/2008 @ 09:06 [ref: 6741] |
Mary Sullivan , New Jersey | WW II - picture of a plane that looks like it is landed on its belly; however, the front view shows the nose resting on a kind of cement block. There are four engines with propellers that are rounded or curled backward. I can read the model number of the wing - can anyone tell me how I find out the history of the plane. My father was in Greenland after 1944. 10/20/2007 @ 14:13 [ref: 6413] |

Joe Marine Gate City, Virginia | Have followed the story from the beginning and loved it all. Thanks for a great experience both listening to the run ups of the engines and then the flight a few weeks later. Marvelous! One brother flew in B-24s and another was crew chief on P-51s so I grew up in the wwII era. Sorry to see Glacier Girl leave Middlesboro and will miss my visits to see her and take friends. 05/10/2007 @ 16:01 [ref: 5915] |
Gene Moore Lenoir City, Tennessee | I remember when B-24's would fly over Knoxville Tn. on their way to their staging for their flight over seas.I guess my love for flying really took hold of me then. I joined the CAP and went to nashville for training. I guess that the B-24 and P38 was my favorite plane.Years I got my pilot's license and still love it. I have been to Middlesbour several times(ever time my plane need an annual) and talked to Bob, and watched the restoration of the Girl, when it flew for the first time I was there, It brought tears, and a feeling that is hard to describe. I just want to tell all the crew that restored that beatiful aircraft that with all my heart, and I am sure that there are others, you made my day. THANKS Roy ,Bob and all. 04/07/2007 @ 07:57 [ref: 5792] |
Darryl Smith Milford, Ohio | Stopped by the museum while on my first trip to the Gap. Thought I might spend 30 minutes or so there, as the focus is on one (very special) P-38. I would up staying there for two hours, talking with the staff, spending money on souvenirs, and enjoying the story of Glacier Girl. Well worth the trip to Middlesboro! 09/19/2006 @ 06:26 [ref: 5276] |
ann bridges white pine, Tennessee | My husband and I were at the air show on Sept 3, 2005. We had a great time. We flew on the DC 3.
We get to Middlesboro as often as time will allow us, and we always stop in to see the "GIRL". Everytime we stop by we are in awe of this airplane. But to see her fly is just beautiful.
Thanks for the experience.

John A Costanzo Troutville,, Virginia | Roy and Bob, Grew up with Roy and finished school with him in the late 40's. Lost contact until he brought the "GIRL" to M'boro. Made several trips to visit your hanger and to see Roy and Bob, quite a feat. Funny thing Roy, I had one of your golf shirts on and was playing a Senior match at Smith Mountain, Va. While eating lunch, one of the guys saw my shirt with the Girl on it and ask me where I got it. I told him about what you had done and he said that he flew with one of the pilots in that group that landed the P-38"s on the ice. Wish I had gotten his name and etc. Oh well, I've been keeping up with you folks and I wish you well. A ole friend......John 09/06/2005 @ 23:29 [ref: 4414] |
