I was a mechanic on the F-84's from 1965 until they were phased out around 1970. They were fun to work on. Note that these planes did not have afterburners, and took a lot of runway to get off the ground (except the one I saw that took off with JATO bottles strapped on). Also worked around the T-33's and the old C-47 we had out there. Long live the 178th!

I grew up in Yellow Springs in the 1960's . Back in the day, I remember the 178th OANG jets blasting over the town, full AB, wide friggin' open, 300-500 yds over the house. I could hear the rumble of the launch, and I knew which bearing to look towards. I'd see y'all, two jets, in pairs, knowing that the sight of the jets was a few seconds ahead of the sound. I'm sure the vintage F-84 on the plinth was one of those monsters of the day. CKG

This is a follow up on a previous comment regarding Richard Lutz, a possible former member of the 178th from the Springfield area. If anyone knows his whereabouts please advise, thanks

Greetings. I used to be a pilot in the 162nd TFS, 178th TFG. I flew the F84F Thunderstreak and F100 Supersabre. They were good years and I have fond memories. I often wonder what happened to some of the guys in the squadron. Anyone know of any reunions? You can contact me at jfrederick5@woh.rr.com or supersabre2001@yahoo.com thanks.

To answer a couple of questions... "Vegas" is still with the unit. Richard Lutz is no longer in the ANG. But I believe that he is still in the Springfield area.
