Steve Austin Keller, TX | Mr. McClain,
You mentioned Dottie Furman in your previous note.
My parents mentioned Dottie on and off over the years, but I don't know what Dottie's background / role in aviation is. My Dad has since passed away, and my Mother's memory is fading fast from Alzheimers.
I accompanied my Dad, Fred Austin of TWA and my brother Fred III when we flew from the San Fernando Valley up to Palmdale around 1965 to meet with Jack Conroy. Jack and Dad were friends, and Fred III was interviewing for a position as Loadmaster on the Pregnant Guppy. I was only 4 or 5 years old at the time, but I still remember standing next to the nose wheel and looking up at that vast aircraft.
I'd appreciate any info you could provide.
Thanks,
Steve Austin

Stan McClain VNY, CA | Typo: Douglas Ettridge's show is on March 24, 2006...not 2004 as posted. 03/01/2006 @ 10:15 [ref: 12661] |
Stan McClain , CA | Guppy and Douglas Ettridge.
I rarely see anything posted about Jack Conroy...and I found this site by searching "Douglas Ettridge."
As you all know Douglas was also a friend of Jack's and Douglas is having his "Farewell Exhibition" on March 24th 2004 at the Airtel Plaza Hotel at VNY. 5:30 to 8:30.
Douglas is getting up there in his years and has decided to make this his last trip.
One of you wrote about having a Guppy reunion...wht not meet up at Douglas' last show? Every year several people who knew Jack are there; Clay Lacy (co-pilot on the Guppy's maiden flight), Dottie Furman, last year Dee Howard came, and as I recall, a Guppy mechanic came.
For more information call the Airtel Plaza Hotel 818 997 7676. 03/01/2006 @ 10:13 [ref: 12660] |
Robert Filiatreaux Beverly Hills, CA | I remember climbing up into the cockpit in 1968 when I was just 7 years old! I was arouind this family of giants for over 5 years of my early life.
My Dad worked for Jack Conroy - the genius behind these magnificent machines.
I have some great original artwork (large drawings by Douglas Ettridge)that my dad used when pitching companies to use Guppy's for transport. Have some old origional photos of these guys from this era too.
It was a real special time.
Contact me if you would like to see the paintings and drawings.

Dudley M. Nutt Santa Barbara, CA | We'll I'm back to work in the Santa Barbara (Goleta) hangers where I started in 1979 for Aero Spacelines, Inc. working on the last two Guppys for France (Le Super' Gupea!)
Back after 15 years, and there are lots of folks still here that were directly involved with Jack Conroy, and all the Guppys.
Lots of historical information, still have a Guppy part with my inspection stamp impression on it.
Need to get all these good folks together, and do the Renunion thing with the Press.
Did you know that the first Super Guppy (Now NASA's at DM) had an inflight failure of the nose latching mechanism due to hydraulic failure?
The controls got real stiff, lots of noise. Mr. Clarence Smith the Crew Chief, opened the cabin door, looked inside the fuselage to see daylight all the way around (the nose was opened in flight!!!!!!)
The under floor flight control cables and the main hinge were the only things holding the nose together.
Straight in approach somewhere in Africa. Successful landing.
Redesign of the system after that one!!!
More stories? Lots of 'em
