I flew in Honduras in 1992 and enjoyed the RU21H1 and H2 version. I had just gotten qualified in the C12 and walked into the MILI Bn to be assigned the RU21. The inertial nav system often drifted during the 4 hour missions. The GPS occasionally locked onto 3 satellites but was generally not reliable. We all developed raccoon face from wearing the oxygen mask. I remember the joys of racing to beat the afternoon thunderstorms from blocking the path back to Soto Cano. I'm still in uniform but instructing in the UH60. Mechanically, the RU21 was very reliable. Our contract maintenance performed well. I was told that the RU21s were sold to a private concern and placed back into the civiliam market. I wish the Rucker museum had one example.

I flew RU-21s in Honduras for a few years. It was a pretty tough aircraft. Spent many hours "on track" sucking O2 cold toes and all. My last job on active duty was as Company Commander of C Co. MILI in Orlando. Great unit and bunch of soldiers!! Miss them all. Unfortunately, after I left active duty the Army sent most of the RUs to Davis-Monthan to be scrap. A couple of them were spared and sent to the Guard as interim airframes for TAGs waiting on C-12s.

RU-21H were for the most part GUARDRAIL V elint aircraft used in europe and Korea (B Co,3rd MI). For those sky riders who spent hours and hours "on track", on O2, with cold toes, we remember we were 'target one' for the bad guys. Life was grand, not. But it did a great job and during my tour with the help of the great maintainers made every mission including the QRCs.
