HAVING AIRCRAFT IN MY BLOOD SINCE LINDBERG FLEW THE
ATLANTIC ( MY FATHER SAID IF GOD WANTED MAN TO FLY HE
WOULD HAVE GIVEN HIM WINGS !!! ) I WORKED ON AND FLEW IN
MOST ALL KINDS FROM TRAVEL AIR CROP DUSTERS IN THE 30,S
AT-6s , P-40s THROUGH THE B-52G MODELS.
A INTERESTING EXPIERENCE WHILE SERVING AS AN MAINTENCE
SUPERVISOR AT MARCH AFB IN THE 1960s OCCURED . WE WERE
UPGRADING FROM THE B-47s TO THE B-52B MODEL AIRCRAFT.
I HAD THE HONOR OF SIGNALLING THE WING COMMANDER PARKING
THE 1st AIRCRAFT TO ARRIVE! AS HE APPROACHED MY SIGNALS
THE AIRCRAFT SUDDENLY LURCHED TO THE RIGHT THEN LEFT.
STUNNED TO SAY THE LEAST I HAD MOMENTARILY FORGOT ABOUT
THE CLASSROOM TRAINING ABOUT THE CROSSWIND LANDING GEAR
FACTOR !!! IT WAS AGREAT AIRCRAFT & IM SAD TO SEE
THEM SCRAPPED !!!

I served with the 22BW-Heavy from 1961 through 1966. 22FMS 42350 was my AFCS.
Really enjoyed my time working on these birds. Some of our birds were lost overseas with crews. May we always remember them and this great aircraft in which they flew into history.

An Aircraft listed in your text ( around the world flight ) B-52B 53-380 was shot down over New Mexico on April 7,1961.
An F-100 out of Kirkland AFB accidentally fired a sidewinder missile due to an electrical short circuit.
I was a maint. controller and was scheduled to get my four hours on that flight, however I had worked a sixteen hour shift the night before and my assistant made the flight. He managed somehow to get out, but suffered dearly.
We lost some fine crew members. God bless them where ever they may be.

I thought this might be an interesting addition to your wonderful web site, it was however, a sad ending for 53-380.
