I love the B-52 stratofortress! One of the best SAC bombers of all time, but I thought that they removed the tail turret off the B-52?

Hi I worked on the B-52 great ol Buff,

I had a metal paperweight thing that was a example of the B-52 alloy, it said Sample of 2024-T351 Aluminum Alloy from the Wing Skin of the B-52, well about 6 mos ago I went to visit a friend at Hawthorne Northrop Grumman plant and left it for 2 mins and came back and someone had stole it!

If you know anyone who might have one to buy, sell, trade please let me know! Thanks

I collect these from other aircraft as well, and might be interested,
WANTED Lucite / Acrylic/ Perspex Paperweights
WANTED Lucite / Acrylic/ Perspex Paperweights mainly aviation related....many may say they have a “First Chip” in example “ First Chip from the milling process of the YF-23” or F-16 or something like that, many are from planes, missiles etc…
Some examples. McDonnell Douglas C-17 Production Shaving Lucite Paperweight, First F-22 Production Chip Lucite in the shape of the state of Georgia, containing production chip / shaving any project! See link for photos

Another type are made from metals, materials & alloys used in the aircraft's manufacture they have “this is a example of the aluminum alloy used in making the B-52, they are about the size of a pack of cigarettes, see link to photos

REMEMBER-I pay a finders fee; please pass this around to anyone who may be able to help… Thanks from Charles!

Regarding tail armament of B-52, the most detailed information I could find shows:

Early RB-52B (52-004 to 008) were delivered with quad .50 cal guns with the A3A control systems.

Problems with the A3A prompted a trial of the twin 20mm with the md-5 fire control delivered in 52-009.

The next 4 (52-010 to 013) were delivered with the original .50 cal / A3A combination.

The twin 20mm / MD-5 combination was adopted as "standard" and delivered with 52-8710 to 8716 and 53-0366 to 0384.

The 20mm combination was found to be no better than the quad .50 mount, and hopes for an "improved A3A" led to a reversion to the quad .50 guns in 53-0385 to 53-0391.

In other words, the "B" aircraft came in a variety of tail mounts, with both quad .50 and twin 20mm well represented.

sincerely, Gary Giesecke

All models prior to the B-52C had twin 20mm guns. The B-52C had the first turret with 4 .50 caliber machine guns. It was the A-3A Fire Control System. Replaced with the MD-9 in the D's, E's and F's. The G's had AN/ASG-15 improved FCS and the H's had the new and improved AN/ASG-21 with a 6 barrel 20mm cannon.

Apparently the RB-52B had a B-47 type tail turret with two 20mm cannon. Does anyone know why?
