| James E. Edmondson Dunwoody, GA | When I was stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB,AZ in the mid-sixties, we called the U-3 a chase plane. It would fly along with a U-2 Spy Plane on training missions. There would be a U-2 pilot in the U-3 flying alongside the U-2, giving instructions to the new pilot in training. There were only a couple of modified two-seater U-2's at the time, so the chase plane served as a second seat. They were assigned to the 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. The one I flew was refurbed with an Army Paint job and a new avionics package. Its last "duty assignment" was at a U.S. Army Flight Facility in New Iberia, La. The Aircraft was assigned to the 377th Suport Brigade, New Orleans, La.
