Gregg Arrington Richmond, VA | I served in VR-48 from spring of 88 till September 1991. I arrived at the squadron not too long after the crash. Was an AE (Aviation Electrician's Mate) Petty Officer 3rd class and a plane captain when I left after 1 tour. Proud to have served as an enlisted sailor with the C-131. 03/16/2008 @ 11:03 [ref: 20044] |

P Chesney Stafford, VA | I also want to remember the crew of 817. I was with VR 48 with Jay Gottshall and remember that day. Scotty was a good friend, LCDR Jack McMullen, LT John Gore good pilots. It took a long time for VR-48 to recover from that day but we did and got even better.

Mike Frampton USNR(ret.) , MD | Was in VR 48 Powerplants from 1978 until 1991. Great group of people in the VR community to have been associated with 10/21/2006 @ 14:45 [ref: 14527] |
Jim Robinson Shallotte, NC | I was stationed at Patrick AFB FL. in 54 & 55. We had C-131 's for ECM and other missile range work. We had one that was empty execpt for insturment built to test for refractory of radio waves. We could simulate weightless conditions on this airplane. It was a real thrill to float from the floor up to the ceiling and around in the cabin of the airplane. We had others with ECM gear aboard for monitoring range frequencies. My primary job was the radio operator. Had a table mounted in the rear of the airplane with an ART-13 transmitter and a BC-348 receiver. Had a good time flying up and down the missile range.

Joe Falen Princeton, MN | There is a picture of the tail of 55-0299 in the 38th Infantry Division, Indiana National Guard, of 1961. Too bad it didn't have to whole aircraft. If I could get my scanner to work, I would send a picture of it... 06/01/2006 @ 19:03 [ref: 13430] |
Steve Imrisek Eastern Shore, MD | I flew Dollar 18's, C 9's and that beautiful Convair 580. It jumped into the sky with those big turbo's. Fun airplane, last of the dinosaurs. Don't miss the fuel leaks though! 05/06/2006 @ 20:50 [ref: 13218] |
Jesse W Walter, Jr, AZ1 USNR-Ret. , MD | I was present at VR52 Det. Wash (logs and records and maintenance control) when we acquired the Convairs from the DC Air Guard. Col. Taylor was there at the time, but retired shortly thereafter. The Navy received three aircraft, the nose of 816, and lots of spares. Compared to C-118-B's they were a great improvement. Thanks to Jay Gottshall for refreshing my memory of that sad time in 1985.
I was a "plank-owner" of VR-48 and was there when the Convair's retired in 1990, so I was there for their entire Naval Careers. I have a small model of 815 with the Navy paint job on it. 299 was always a favorite as it had a full APU on it and would stay cool in the summertime when the engines were shut down. 815 and 817 just had Gas Turbine Compressor (GTC) starters.
Apparently both aircraft are alive doing well. I searched http://www.aircraftone.com/ for Convair and found their serial numbers 550299 (Now N191FL) 542815 (Now N723ES)
among planes owned by the IFL Group. Their website is http://www.iflgroup.com/

Jay Gottshall , PA | I was a flight attendant on the C-131H for 6 years, 1981 -1987 in VR-48 NAF Washington. The November 15, 1985 crash of 542817 was devistating to all squadron personnel. I want everyone to remember LCDR Jack McMullen, LT John Gore, and AMH2 Robert Scott Gray who were killed that day in Dothan Alabama. 06/13/2005 @ 10:30 [ref: 10466] |
Bernard (bernie) Goeders.T/sgt. Del City,Okla. 73115, OK | I was Crew chief on 54-2816, 89th MAW from 1969-July1974
when I retired. 54-2816 was flying on an initial and getting OK flights before I retired. My crew and I polished
2816 with turtle wax, Boy she sure was pretty. We had her in hanger #5 all week, she sure got the SAM FOX treatment
{sam fox} means things were just right. I still have a
picture of 2816 in-flight, also a picture of 2815 on
the ramp at Andrews A.F.B. Its so sad to know my aircraft
came to such a sad ending. In 1972 2816 went through depot
maintinance at Greenville,TX.I was there serving as Crew chief and maint. Adviser.I still have the gold ash tray they
gave me. Its in the shape of TX.
God bless all the troops then and now
