The second photo should be removed. That is NOT an XF15C-1 but a C-46 Comando!

Ref Aarons comment of 30 May 04,a 30 hour test flight thats a hell of an endurance for a hybrid power a/c(or any other for that matter)?

The last remaining XF-15C is on display at the Quonset Air Museum. At this museum you can walk right up toit and touch it. That is unique as far as air museums go! It is #2 of 3 produced. #1 crashed and #3 was scraped.

Because the XF15C-1 Was an experimental airplane,it did not serve as a fighter during World war II.The XFR-1 Fireball proved better than the aircraft and entered production as the FR-1.The XF15C-1 never reached production because the Fireball was already in production.

When it was clear that there were no production F15C-1s,the program of the XF15C-1 was scrapped. As a result,no further work was undertaken on the XF15C-1 project. This was because the aircraft`s performance was poor, and nothing came of any plans to introduce the XF15C-1 into production.

On September 1937,one of the two XF15C-1 prototypes was parked behind a building at Rochester,New York. After its accident, this aircraft made its maiden flight from Rochester on 8 October 1945,but this was flown only twice before being scrapped. This was the first prototype. The second prototype was also scrapped after flying only twice. As A result the XF15C-1 never achived production.

The Curtiss XF15C-1 is a great US Navy fighter with tricycle landing gear, even though it did not make it past the testing stage.Although the XF15C-1`s performance is dissapointing and the next two prototypes were canceled,it is still a good fighter for the US Navy.

Curtiss XF15C-1.The Curtiss XF15C-1 Was the Last US Navy experimental fighter built by Curtiss. It was the fastest fighter in the US Navy.On October 8,1940.The US Navy requirement called for four XF15C-1 prototypes. The first XF15C-1 prototype made its first flight from San Deigo,California. After about 20 minutes of flight testing, the aircaft was preparing to make a three point landing at San Deigo when, the aircraft lost one 1220-gallon fuel tank and caught fire. The pilot bailed out as the aircraft rooled out of control;he survived. The second prototye was taxiing for take-off for a 30-hour test flight from Moffet field when the aircraft collided with another XF15C-1.The pilot was not injured. The third and fourth prototypes were canceled. No production aircraft were build and the two prototypes ended their days as experimental aircraft.
