Joshua Scarcliff Mobile, AL | My grandfather commanded attack squadron 153(Navy USS Coral Sea) in the late 60s in vietnam they flew this aircraft. he used to tell me stories about their missions and how the A4 could handle he loved it! he was awarded a lot of medals during vietnam he passed away this march but i'll never forget the passion he had telling about his squadron and his favorite aircraft! 06/04/2008 @ 20:01 [ref: 21115] |

Adam Hodge Marietta, GA | Hey Guys,
Not sure which model A-4 section this best to ask this in, haha. :)
I'm currently a HS Student (Jr) trying to start up a collection of Scooter patches from any service/mission (VA,VMA,VC,VT, etc) as a keepsake. I'm looking for anything anyone can spare (Squadron Patches,Decomm Patches,Shoulder Patches,Anniv Patches, etc) related to Navy or Marine A-4 Squadrons.
I wish I would've had the opportunity to see the Scooter in Navy/Marine Action but came along too late!
If anyone can help/donate anything to jumpstart my attempt at a collection, Please email me at HODGETCA@aol.com (Can try and offer a little bit of $$ if need be). I doubt there is many folks my age (17) trying to start a collection like this.
Thanks in Advance and Skyhawks Forever! 02/03/2008 @ 03:00 [ref: 19531] |
Danny garrison , CA | My father in law JL Lumsden RET LTCol USMC flew these bad boys in combat and recieved the DFC medal in combat . He said there was never another little hotrod like them they never let you down 03/02/2007 @ 20:39 [ref: 15728] |
Jim Margrave Robesonia, PA | If you look at the black and white picture on the bottom of this page, of an A4E pilot ejecting from an A4; well that was VA152, on the USS ShangriLa, CVA(S)38, in the Tonkin Gulf in the summer of 1970. This photo was widely ditributed at the time, and my mother asked me did I know anything about this incident. I am the red shirt on deck, and the plane was being turned over to me for safeting the guns, when it became evident that the plane had no brakes. I was just outside the frame of the photo when it was taken. Pilot and aircraft both survived the ordeal.

Steve Brown , OH | I was with MAG-12 at Bien Hoa with two squadrons (211, 311)
from May 1972 until the ceasefire (Jan 1973). I remember
when 311 surpassed 50,000 combat missions in Vietnam and
had a big sign placed on the covered revetments saying so.
Anyone else remember that? As far as I remember we had two
A-4E's shot down during that time. Both pilots survived but
one was captured near An Loc and held as a POW in Cambodia.
Our last KIA was on Jan 26, 1973, about 24 hours before the
Paris Peace Accords cease fire went into effect. Also
remember the grenade that went off in the H&MS-12 barracks
on Nov. 5, 1972 wounding four marines. My friend, Glenn
Baker rotated out earlier that day and so avoided death as
it went off only 3 feet from where his head would have been
if he had still been there. I told him about it 29 years
later after we reestablished contact through the internet. 05/09/2005 @ 13:03 [ref: 10161] |
Dave Risner Glencoe, MN | My mos was a jet engine mechanic on the A-4E Skyhawk at Chu Lai South Vietnam from November 1967 until January 1970. All the time there I was a Plane Captain on the A-4E, and loved that bird.
We flew air support in the "super Gaggles" for the defense of Khe Sahn when they were in real danger of being overrun.
Our turn around time was 15 minutes with all hands, including pilots re-fueling, pre-flighting, humping bombs, and getting the birds back in the air to get back into the fight. A lot of like minded people, a lot of work and effort, a lot of memories, some good and some bad. We lost pilots, some killed, some captured. 12/13/2004 @ 19:18 [ref: 8857] |
Frank Kotlarz Baytown, TX | I was with Matt Sego when 211 went to Bien Hoa for the Easter offensive. I didn't leave until December 3, 1972 after extending for 3 extra months. VMA-211 flew the A-4E Skyhawks. MAG 12 was the group with 2 Squadrons, 211 and 311. Although on an Air Base, we sufferred through many rocket attacks although we had only one casualty. That happened August 1, 1972 when Cpl. Luis Alonzo was killed retreiving the Orphanage box for payroll donations. Mag 12 had one of it's pilots shot down and captured. Capt. James P. (Waldo) Walsh was released after the war.
I often wonder what happened to all of those I served with.
SEMPER FI!!!

Tim Lousma Friendswood, TX | Great Airplane that my Father flew in 1963. He had to bail out over the Sea of Japan and I would like to know what model ejection seat this aircraft was equiped with. Anyone know this information? 11/03/2004 @ 10:48 [ref: 8547] |
Dean Terrell Warner Robins, GA | These people here that put some of these pictures need to decide which A4 aircraft picture that they are going to put on here. I looked at the pictures and some of these are not the A4-E. I worked on these A4-E AND TA-4J from 1988-1992 at N.A.S. KEY WEST AND CECIL FIELD VF-45 BLACKBIRDS. I will upload some of my pictures when I find them. 05/16/2004 @ 08:33 [ref: 7415] |
