Served the Marine A-4 on 3 separate occasions. First, the TA-4F's of MAG-12 "Hangerline" Iwakuni, Japan in 1977. Second, the A-4E and TA-4J in MAG-42, Det "B" in Memphis from 1980-1984. Last, the "Super" A-4M in VMA-223 (Cherry Point) from 1984 until their transfer to my old squadron in Memphis. VMA-223 flew both the final A-4M and initial AV-8B flights on the same day, by the outgoing and incoming CO's. First and only complete USMC "type aircraft" transition took place at VMA-223 (Great American Bulldogs) with no standown period. It has been a pleasure to maintain such a splendid aircraft as the A-4 Skyhawk.

Part of VMAT-102 from 82-86 in the Hydraulics shop. Worked for Gunny Oumak with Sgt Al, Jim Robinson, Rich Wojciechowski, and Brian Knecht. Loved working on the A-4.

I haven't dropped by this web site in quite a while, but it's nice to see that one of my photos is still posted at the bottom of the page.

It's also good to see some messages from Paul Shedal. I knew him as Gunny Shedal, the NCOIC of the VMAT-102 avionics shop where I was assigned. Gunny Shedal did a great job of running the shop, and of building some team spirit. We had some great avionics shop parties too... Gunny Shedal.. contact me if you want to buy the negatives to the photos. :-)

I really enjoyed working on the Skyhawk, and had the pleasure of a number of flights in the back seat of our TA-4's. Did I say pleasure?? Well, other than filling a plastic bag with my breakfast, it was fun! Those bombing runs were just hell on me, though.

regards,
Steve Kurt
formerly of VMAT-102 avionics.

I worked in the shop that did overhauls on J-52 P-8's and P408's ( H&MS-13 Power Plants, El toro) from 77-81. VMA-214 was my parent squadron, and traveled overseas with the squadron. I was also the test cell operator for the Garrett AiResearch JFS-100-34 jet fuel starter for the A4-M. Had an awesome four years in the Corps, met a lot of great people, learned a great craft, and grew up a ton.

I don't think Bob Wheeler was ever a recruiter. Also like to remember Mr. John Garcia. He was the Iwakuni A-4 McDonnell Douglas Rep for many years in the 70's. When VMA-223 arrived there with the first A4M's he helped to make the logistics transition easier. MAG-12 supply simply said, "A4s?...Oh, we got that stuff." Well, it was a pain at first convincing them that the A4M was different! Great guys Bob and John!

MOS 6531 74-81. Had to wait until I was 17 to join. After Vietnam the Corps was so shorthanded they sent me straight from Boot Camp to the 2nd Marine Air Wing. OJT on AH-1J's. Med Cruise with HMM-264 10/76 - 5/77. Second tour with VMAT-102. Had to learn the A4 ordnance systems OJT, also. In six months I was running my own crew. Met my Best Friend at New River with HMA-269. Did both tours and overseas together. He became a Nurse and served as a Corpsman with the 1st Marine Division going into Kuwait in 1991. I went on to become a Paramedic. Can remember the recruiter posters at the Hanger: "The grass isn't greener on the outside". I was too young to know the truth in that statement. I miss the men, the comradeship (GySgt Matthews, Tessier, Dorn. Tim, Leon, Roger and many other faces I can't put a name to. I'll post some pics of A4's firing 5" Rockets while on deployment to NAS Fallon, NV.
