william f lane el centro, CA | I remember once while with VA-56 on board the USS Ticonderoga operating off of Vietnam when our only two catapults went down. In order to fly skycap against incoming fighters we had to deck launch the spads. Always nice to have known we had them aboard. They flew many rescap cover missions for our downed pilots. Once when LCDR Creyton went down and was in a rice patty they used up all of their ammo and dropped their belly tanks at the approaching Kong soldiers. Then they flew so low that they came back with mud on the bottom of the planes in a galant but vane effort to save him from capture. He was captured and spent several years in captivity finally being freen in l972. What an honor to have served with those wonderful birds.......... 04/11/2007 @ 08:34 [ref: 16153] |

Clint Randle \"Randy\" Yuma, AZ | I was with VAW-13 from Feb. 1964 to July 1967 and was fortunate to have flown with the best. Lt. Miller if you ever read this you were the best of the best.. Mike Adams and I have a story to tell about that. Was on the Midway when We lost Bill Ampspacher and T.L. Plants. Was in the back up plane in case they could'nt launch. We crossed decked from carrier to carrier and only were relieved when a replacement was flown out to the carrier. Was on det in Tiawan when all hell broke loose in Vietnam. Spent a week or so waiting on transportation and we dubbed that det ( hungry) because we ran out of money and could not buy our food. Lots of peanut butter sandwiches. 02/21/2007 @ 10:04 [ref: 15607] |
Tom Hobbs Greenfield, MO | I came to VAW-13 in Feb 1962. Worked in the Maint. Office with LCdr Brunskill, Chief P.A. Ialo (Launch and Recovery Officer later on) and Chief Conder. Went on the Detachment to Cubi Point and with group led by LCdr Bill Reeder to Saigon in 1962. Kept the log books on these Jewels for 2 years. Went from ADR to AZ. Got out in 1964 and went back to college. Put in a few hours as a "right seat lookout" :) . Others that I remember, Ron Yahn, Lt. D.P. Stevens, Arnold Fust. 02/09/2007 @ 13:31 [ref: 15467] |
Rick Harriger Corning, NY | I flew as EMC operator on the EA1 in the picture on board the USS America (Det. 66) 1966 - 1967. Often wondered what happened to the old bird. Had many good flights and times with the guys to Det. 66. 01/03/2007 @ 11:12 [ref: 15085] |
Richard Forbes West Springfield, MA | I came to VAW-13 in August of 1963 from AEWBARRONPAC. Earned my wings as an ECM operator(ATN-3/AC). Participated in the Bonnie Dick's ORI in early 1964 - ended up with a stay in Hawaii for two (2) weeks. Deployed to DET 1 in the spring of 1964 and participated in the DET that went to Okinawa, Japan and South Korea. Was part of the crew returning from Okinawa when the other bird, we were flying wing with, appeared to have swallowed a valve and had to ditch. Jim Mulligan & Dick Thompson were the two ECM operators on the bird - Don't remember the Pilot or NFO. Everyone got out and were quickly picked up by a SAR out of Clark. Returned to the states in September 1964 and was discharged in November 64. Great memories - Great shipmates. 09/08/2006 @ 12:41 [ref: 14113] |

Bernie Fielder , AR | I was with the zappers in Alameda and Cubi Pt in 1966 and 1967, as the senior yeoman in the admin office working with Cmdr Gallion (spelling?). Had a lot of flight hours as a so-called flight observer, checking out our flight-crews assigned to the various detachments aboard the carriers, and even flights into DaNang to help escort damaged spads back to Cubi for repairs. What a plane. I was discharged the same day the first EA-3 came in to replace the EA-1. 04/11/2006 @ 13:31 [ref: 13124] |
Robert Thomas Kingzett Austinburg, OH | Hello Zappers-- I started out in VAW-11 Dec.1960 until June
1961 when we started carquals on the Ranger for a WestPac tour and bacame a VAW-13 Zapper when the "Queen" was transferred and the "Guppies" stayed with VAW 11. What a great Sqdrn we had in those days...hard working fun loving.
Spent many days deployed to one place or another and made it to 12 different Carriers for one to two weeks at a time.
Also many different Airfields throughout the Westpac area.
