Pat Cudo Bloomington, MN, MN | I served in VQ-1 from 76 -79 and to this day recall the good times working on the "Whale" or "Whistling Shitcan" as some called it, and the friends I made. When I got out of the service I heard a whistle coming form the sky and said to myself " that's a whale close by, and sure enough looked up in the sky and there was a tanker version of the A3. It reminded me so much of the fun I had while on the Kitty Hawk and Ranger dets during the years I was in the Q.

JOHN HERNDON FRIENWOOD, TX | The picture in the middle of the two EA-3Bs Buno 146453 Ranger 15 and 146455 Ranger 17, was taken by me over the Pacific ocean in 1980 on the way to the USS Eisenhower in support of the Iranian Hostage Crisis, on VQ-2's first around the world det RT-80 (Short for Road Trip 1980) 05/13/2007 @ 12:57 [ref: 16476] |
Chuck Provow Clearfield, UT | I worked on the EA-3B/TA-3B's as an AME from 1970-72 with VQ-1 home based at Atsugi Japan, then Agania Guam. Spent most of my time at "Det Da Nang". It was a great aircraft. Fun to fly in. It was a bit scary the first time you did a "cat shot" off a carrier. They tended to dip a little as they left the deck. I always wondered what happened to all of the "Whales of VQ-1. 04/14/2007 @ 21:32 [ref: 16191] |

Peewee Roberts Grand Bay, AL | I worked on the whales while I attached to VQ-1 on Guam from 1977 to 1980. I was on det to the USS Coral Sea and On the USS Ranger when it colliaded with the oil tanker at sea on the way to the IO. Also was on det to Cubi Pt. It is good to see them again. Sure do miss them. 01/14/2007 @ 13:05 [ref: 15185] |
Kirk Peterson willow grove, PA | I was lucky enough to work on the "whales", including BuNo 146454 (Ranger-4), as a tron on deployment and in 12C from 89 until its retirement in 92 when I was with VQ-2. It was a fun plane to work on.
BTW, I see you pop up on a lot of websites Raf and Swish..

Pendleton snellville, GA | I am so glad to see these pictures of the whale. I was a member of the last seagoing detachment . Det "c" from VQ-1. I allways have been proud of my whaler history and allways will be. I even have a engineers drawing tattooed on my arm of my bird. To all my whaler friends out there here's to us! 07/13/2005 @ 15:56 [ref: 10742] |
R. A. Fiol , FL | Though officially named the "Skywarrior", you may want to list the name that the proud A-3'ers (and everyone else) knew it by - The Whale! 10/25/2002 @ 22:13 [ref: 5955] |
Mark Swisher Fort Worth, TX | The Douglas EA-3B operated throuout the Cold War, Vietnam War,Gulf War
