Bill Kargel Atlanta, GA | Not much to add to what has already been mentioned. What I have been able to learn about the Skypirate so far that I can add is something for comparison. It could carry four times the payload weight of a Grumman Avenger. I have also read that it was larger, heavier and faster than a B-25 medium bomber...if it had been operational on a CV, it would have been the largest piston-engined aircraft to fly on a carrier at that time. 09/07/2002 @ 20:26 [ref: 5647] |
LT Joel Bashore Patuxent River, MD | 3-man crew; 28-cylinder P&W R-4360 radial engine; contrarotating propellers; 2 wing-mounted 20mm cannon; maiden flight: Mar 14, 1945;

Brian Kim Neville Ft. Meade, MD | Nicknamed Skypirate, the Douglas XTB2D-1 was 46 feet long, with a wingspan of 70 feet, and a gross weight of 28545 lbs.
It was designed to be operated from Midway class carriers, so it was to big to operate in WWII.
