Fairchild C-123J 'Provider'
|
Ron Gamel Depew, OK | In Sept. 1959 I was stationed at Eilson AFB in Alaska. I was sent TDY to Fletchers Ice Island, North of Point Barrow. The aircraft used to take supplies and personnel to Ice Island was the C123J. It was stationed at Ladd AFB at Fairbanks. I returned to Alaska from Ice Island in March 1960. The C123J operated from the ice using skis attached to the wheels. The jet engine was used for take-off then shut down and the rest of the flight was with the recip's. I appreciate seeing the pictures and stories on this web site. 02/20/2007 @ 19:02 [ref: 15603] |
Larry Reynolds Mason City, IA | I was a flight engineer with the 319tn Air Commando. I ferried the C-123 back and forth from Vietnam to Haggerstown Maryland where they installed the Jet engines and then back to Nam. We never loss an airplane but I went down twice due to engine malfunctions. Both times made land once in Hawaii and once on the island of Samar. I really loved and trusted that old airplane to get me where I was going. I even flew the Fulton system which was used to pick up down pilots with the use of a ballon. 01/26/2007 @ 11:29 [ref: 15306] |
Lovell Bryant Pittsburgh, PA | I am repainting the cabinet/face of the Receiver-Indicator R-65/APN-9 Navigation Aid that is in the C-123. Ours is looking ratty and I want to make it pretty before the 2007 Air Show season. Anyone have a picture of the front panel that shows the lettering for the operating controls?
Thanks,

Tim Garity Lincoln, NE | I may get to help put a C-123 in a museum and have a question. Do the wing mounted J-85's have any type of built in removal assistance device (cable ), or do you have to support the engine and remove the mount bolts ??
Thanks

Tommy G. Harrison, Col (Ret) Apopka, FL | Palmore is partially correct. The unit at Ernest Harmon AFB, Nfld, however, was the 4087th Air Transport Squadron (Medium), 4081st Strategic Wing, 8AF, SAC. This was SAC's only medium air transport squadron ever. I was assigned as a navigator on the C-123J from Sep 58 through the closure of the unit in June of 1960. I have the guideon from the squadron. I also have my old Dash 1.
There were 10 C-123Js built. As I recall, 6 were assigned to Harmon and 4 to Goose Bay. They were designed to operate off the icecap supporting the radar sites. The squadron also had C-54Ds. (I was checked out in that as well.) When operating off the cap, a C-54 would fly top cover so the 123 could find its way back to the radar site in the event it could not complete iots takeoff and had to return to the site to download weight.
One of these days I will get my 35mm slides scanned in.

Daemon San Antonio, TX | There is a C-123J in the Seoul War Museum in South Korea too. 12/07/2004 @ 20:54 [ref: 8810] |
Paul M. Eaton Anchorage, AK | The C-123J's flown by AKANG were good short field aircraft IF the pilots kept the running wing tip jets out of the Alaskan willows! The skis worked well for us. The only real maintenance concern I recall was the flap brackets, which we removed at every opportunity for NDI testing. The Guard technicians on the Periodic maintenance and inspection crew managed to save most of the aircraft washin and flap bracket removal for us weekend warriors.

Garland R. Belote Bay St. Louis, MS | I served with L/Col. Earl Butts the Comander ot the 16th Troop Carrier Sq. at SewartAFB,Tenn. We had the C-122 aircraft and did air landings rather than air drops. I was transferred to C-119 training school for service in Korea. Spent one year on 119s flying cargo into Korea and a few trips into Indo-China. After my tour on the C-119s , I was transferred to EglinAFB,FLa. This is when I was on the Evaluation Team for the C-123. The Officer in charge was Capt. Blackwell. This was a great time in my airforce career.I was on flight status for 17 of my 20 year career, as a flying crewchief. The C-123 was a great plane and the only problem I remember was with air filters. Too much sand etc. was sucked into the engines causing HIGH oil consumption. The tail # of my C-123 was 669. Before the C-122s, I was on the C-82s.I believe the manufacture was the AMERICAN CAN COMPANY.!!! Garland Belote 06/23/2004 @ 11:47 [ref: 7669] |
