I have a special attachment, so to speak, with the EA-6A. While a RADAR tech at VMCJ-3 at El Toro (972) my right hand was crushed by an EA-6A canopy due to a bad switch. I was in the right hand seat and hung there wondering if I should blow the canopy into the hangar, which I figured would also kill me and the guy next to me. Of course we could not cycle the canopy due to the bad switch. So I decided againts blowing the canopy and waited. The guy in the pilot's seat was as shocked as I was. I don't remember his name, but wherever you are - thanks for helping me get out when they finally opened the canopy from the outside! s/f to all my brothers and sisters in the Corps!

I spent time in all 3 J outfits...and almost went to the EA-6B's. Made 2 tours with VMCJ-1, and also with Det-101.
Last WestPac was 77-78 with VMAQ-2 Det B.

Re: VMAQ-3 Aircrew. Most of the VMCJ pilots were cross qualified in both the RF-8A/RF-4Bs and EF-10B/EA-6As.

Gentlemen,
Thanks to all of you for your service, we hope we the inheritors of your mantle are doing as good a job.

Wondering if all pilots in the original VMCJ-2 flew every platform(i.e RF-4, EA-6A and RF-8) or were they restricted to just one?

In 1966 after checking in to VMCJ-2 we found that the firs 4 EA-6As were scheduled to go to Nam within 45 days. Due to last-minute very high up decisions engines on all of the aircraft were to be changed with newer models. The most experienced mechs and electronics and avionics types were on 30 days pre-deployment leave. The remaining folks worked their butts off with 12-hour plus days and 7-working day weeks and did an outstanding job. Belated thanks, guys. And then CNAL said that we were not finished BIS trials. We did not really care.

I served in VMCJ-3 as a RADAR technician based in El Toro California from 1970-1972. Worked on the RF4-B as well! The Intruder crushed my right hand (anyone from J-3 remember that?) in the summer of 1972, and that was it for my career. There was a bad switch in the cockpit and when engine power went down, ground power took over, and the canopy closed. I was hanging over the pilot's seat (with my right hand on the sill) watching the panel and waiting for the RADAR to time out. El-Cruncho. My salute was never the same, so they let me out. I was in the corps 1964 -1968 Sgt.in 68 Puy many of BUNNIES on places you wouldn't belive.Iwas in VMCJ-2 for 3 years plus 1year with J-1 at DaNang 66-67 I remember the bomb dump going off at 0043 in the moring. Iwas taking the crew from the hanger to the chow hall at that very moment.

I WAS AN ECMO AND AN EWO IN VMC-1 VMCJ-2 AND VMCJ-3.I WAS THE OIC OF THE ECM SCHOOL IN VMCJ-3 IN 1962-63. I WAS TRANSFERED INTO THE F4B PROGRAM IN 1963.1963-66 I WAS IN VMFA-542.WHILE IN VIETNAM IN 1965. I FLEW ONE MISSI0N WITH VMCJ-1. THE FIRST SAM STRIKE IN NORTH VIETNAM IN SUPPORT OF THE AIR FORCE ON JULY27TH.JUNE 1966 TO JULY 1969 I WAS THE EA6A PROJECT OFFICER AT THE NAVAL TEST CENTER IN PAX RIVER MD.1970 I WAS THE EWO OF THE FIRST MARINE AIR WING (REAR).I TREASURE MY TIME IN THE ELECTRONIC WARFARE FIELD.

I joined VMAQ-2 just as it was transitioning to the EA-6B in 1976. We had a Det up at NAS Whidbey for a couple years. Took the first EA-6B deployment out on the Midway in Dec. 1978 (WesPac/I.O.). A lot of my senior NCO's (I was but a lance coolie at the time) reminiced about J-1, -2, and -3. my first NCOIC was Sgt. Otis "Sudsy" Harwell, and later SSGT Buddy Phillips, SSgt Tom Nichols, Sgt Kenny Van Bibber and Sgt "Dollar Bill" Koperick. Senior NCO/1stSgt of the Det was Msgt Tom Bond and the OIC was LtCol Royal Moore Jr. - later to be C.O. of VMAQ-2, MAG-14 (as a Colonel) and CG, 1st MAW during Desert Storm. I spent 14 of my 21 years in the Corps in Q-2, plus 3 in Memphis at MATSG-90, and 3 at MATSG Whidbey, where I retired from in 1996.
