Ray McCoy Santa Barbara,, CA | It was developed in '42 not '22. It can be seen at the Palm Springs Air Museum in Palm Springs, CA. It replaced the F4F Wildcat on the Fleet carriers but The F4F and FM2 Wildcats flew off of Escort Carriers untill the War ended. 06/09/2008 @ 12:10 [ref: 21215] |

Elizabeth Robertson Calhoun, LA | My father James Z. Roertson was killed in a mid-air collision over the island of Koho'olawe Hawaii August 18, 1952, the day before he was to come home. He was Navy Reserve in some special training. Please call me if you knew him # 318-614-3525 OR # 318-397-2838. THANKS. 10/24/2007 @ 17:17 [ref: 18293] |
Mac Palmer Port Tobacco, MD | The Hellcat was my favorite of the 14 operational Navy planes I flew in my career. I've spent many many hours in that most comfortable plane, as a Charlie-one chase plane controller. And I also operated as Fox-one, launching and recovering them at Barking Sands, PMR on Kauai.
I flew the F6F-5 and -5K from 1958 to 1960. The last flight was Feb. 25, 1960 at VU-1, Barbers Point, Hawaii.
Very few remain these days, but whenever I see one, I yearn to once again fire up that trusty R-2800-10W and go punch some holes in the sky. 10/09/2007 @ 14:46 [ref: 18145] |
