My first flight as an aircrewman was in the radar seat of an S2F1S1 in VX-1 at NAS Key West, FL. It became my regular ride while I was in the squadron. I was selected to go TAD to Grumman for schools on the S2F-3(as it was known as in those days)After the school the squadron got two aircraft for trials and evaluations. We took them on the USS Randolph for sea trials and then took them on tour to show off to the Canadians in Halifax, NS.
My next Squadron was VS-27, NAS Norfolk, VA. I had to go to the RAG, VS-30 was the training squadron and was just transitioning to the S2F-3, so I didn't do much flying. They made me an impromptu instructor because I had more time in the S2F-3 then they did. But back to the S2F-1's. At the time the VS-27 did not have a ship assigned, and was deployed on the USS Essex. The USS Intrepid was refitted and designated CVS-11 and became the at-sea home of the squadron

Enjoyed reading the comments of former aircrewmen, to William Armstrong, I was also at NAS North Is. and saw that Reserve Pilot put it down when on fire. I was an aircrew instructor at VS 41 from 1968 to 1970, later transferred to VS 37. All the writers share one thing in common, The S2 took alot of punishment and kept asking for more. On one deployment one of our planes took a wave over the bow on a cat shot, on the Tico CVS-14, in 1971. The crew did not know if they were in the water or still in the air. But they made it, a little shook up and all wet, but they were alive. I am also a pilot but I can say this, I would not trade all my other flying experiences for the time spent as an Aircrewmen or behind the yoke of the S2.
