Jim Shepherd Kingston, ON | When your He111 came to Canada a number of years ago, it stopped at Kingston for a few days. Of course I took the tour inside the plane. That was all it took to get me to ask Bill Nagle if $500 would get me a ride. He told me to be out at the airfield at 0900 Friday and I flew from Kingston to Ottawa (approx.100 miles). It was worth every penny. It was my thrill of a lifetime.
At home, I had a partially burned German incendiary bomb that had been dropped on London during the Blitz. I acquired it from the air raid warden who recovered it. He told me it was dropped by a He111.(He was trained in aircraft idenification). When I went for my ride to Ottawa, I gave the bomb to Bill as a donation to the plane. I also noticed the cartridges in the machine gun belts were not authentic so I donated some original German WW11 8mm ammo still in the original unopened boxes.
I am writing because just today I found out the plane crashed in 2003 killing the two crewmen.
You have my belated condolences. 05/10/2006 @ 11:39 [ref: 13245] |
