In late 1941, the hot-selling Howard DGA-15P had an order book of at least a dozen customers. Pearl Harbor quickly changed that - the Navy was looking for staff transports from any and all sources. They bought out the undelivered DGA's from Howard, had these civil airplanes painted in Navy colors, and designated them GH-1. This was the beginning of mass production of Howards NH-1, GH-2, and GH-3 all based on the DGA-15P design. Altogether about 480 planes were sold to the Navy.
