I was one of eighteen original on 216 and 213. Back in the Late 1980 early 1990 the aircraft were referred as SCM aircraft. It was not until Travis got the Aircraft the C-5C changed. I also was one of four Crew Chiefs to take these aircraft through Desert Storm during 1991. When at the 433rd AW the aircraft made all missions NASA asked of the 443rd AW. I worked both 216 and 213 aircraft from the time we received from Lockheed to the time Travis AFB took them over. As far as the back doors not too many person know how to operate those door correctly. After the person that did not know what they were doing, they got hang up, and yes I would have to go out and get those door back in line.

I was assigned to 213 from 81-86 and was her DCC. Flew nearly 2000 hours in three years with the 60th OMS in support of the 4 flying Squadrons. All planes are different and have funny ways. You used to have to stomp on the threshold to get the crew entranceway to come up. She was selected to be a C due to structural cracks that limited her to double and triple period locals (not because she was bellied in!) and was due for major overhaul. Still miss the plane and the people, I have run into a few once and awhile. Be Well. Bogus

I was one of the Crew Chiefs assigned to 68-0213 in the mid eighties. Before it was modified to C-5C. It never was pretty, but it flew great.

Anybody know where I could find dimensions of the cockpit and/or good pictures of this plane? I\'m thinking of building a cockpit model for a flight simulator...

Searching for images of the C-5 Galaxy's "Air Transportable Loading Dock Conveyor system", also known as "A.T.L.D." Any aerial photos would be greatly appreciated, if available.

The comment about the aft doors is right on the money. I was the assistant crew chief on 8216 from 1997 to 1999. Those modified doors were awful to open and close. I think I had to call AR shop at least 5 times to re-rig the doors after I broke em. I still avoid opening C-5 doors to this day (now I'm far from Travis and 216) cause I remember the problems I ran into with the C model aft doors.
Nice to hear stories about the SCM (pronounced scum :-) Bird. Some people who have worked on Freds (C-5's) for years don't even know they exist.
