Wow! Who'da thunk it? A geneology for our beloved C-130s. This was the first time most of us had seen real aircraft in our younger USAF days. I remember arriving at Pope for my first duty station in '75 late at night, and there must've been 20+ of them with engines on and all lit up, getting ready for a formation takeoff. Amazing first impression! In '78/'79, I got my assignment to KadenaAB where the 33rd ARRS had 5 130P/Ns along with 5 Super Jolly Greens. In '79, one of the choppers dropped too low on a refuel, went inverted, and then there were 4 (HH-53s). Amazingly, some of the crew lived to tell about it. Peacetime duty was great with many memorable TDYs throughout the Pacific theatre. Now I work with a bunch of mechs for the airline and have run into several 130 amigos along the way, including L Marinaccio!

I was based in Tuy Hoa AB from June 1969 to June 1970. We did rotations to Udorn AB. I recall the mission of the Herck that returned from somewhere up North , that while refueling a Jolly Green was downed by a Mig , and it was making a pass for the Herck, but the Herck was able to evade the Mig and return to Udorn. The crew kissed the ground upon arrival.

Anybody out there...remember Crown 217 coming back from N.Vietnam after a night mission that resulted in several killed, when the pilot of the chopper went straight down with the hose instead of backing away, caught the refuel hose in the rotor blades and we had lost all utility hydraulic's as it also stripped out the gearbox for the IFR Pod. We were operating out of Udorn RTAFB since it was closer than flying out of S. Vietnam. We brought back a long section of hose whipping around and wiping out runway lights when we landed. The Bull that was the base commander was yelling about his lights when one of the Captains...yelled at him that "we lost people tonight...damned your lights" and he just got in his car and left. I know that the emotions were highly stressed because it shouldn't have happened. I managed to cap the PODS lines and we went to Clark for repairs. Its not always succesful.

Thought I would remember the 39ARRS "King Rescue) provided major support to the Sontay Prison raid flying HC-130P/N while operating from Udorn RTAFB.

Absorbed assets of Det 1, 37 ARRS (5 or 6 HC-130). 8 Jun 67: 39 ARRS transferred to Tuy Hoa AB, Vietnam Tuy Hoa, SVN. 16 Sep 70: 39 ARRS with 11 HC-130P transferred to Cam Ranh AB, Vietnam. There is still a HC-130/P unit at PAFB it's the 39th RQS part of the 920th RQW (formerly 920RQG and 301ST RQS) and has been here since before the AD moved to Moody. The unit was part of the 301st RQS until 99 then becmae a group and seperated the HH-60 and HC-130's into seperate Sqdrns 301st & 39th respectively. I have been in the unit since 1988 at Homestead AFB. Currently we also have 2 WC-130's that are no longer flying the weather mission and we use for pilot pro only. So all AD bubbas out there do not forget that the reserves and guard hold 60% of the rescue iron in the world.

All HC-130H aircraft in the USAF have been modified to HC-130P standards as of 1991-92. These include those that have been further modified to MC-130P standards.

the unit at Patrick no longer exists. It moved to Moody AFB, 71st RQS (AFSOC) in the late 90's. Also, the 550 Special Operations Squadron (AETC) operates a few HC-130's to train aircrews...
