When production planning began on a P-38 model with new chin-mounted core intercoolers, it was recognized that Lockheed subcontractors would initially be unable to provide enough of the new components to supply both of Burbank's twin production lines. With commanders in all theaters crying for more P-38's, a hybrid model was approved for production on one of the lines. Out of a dozen prototypes (LAC c/n's 1001 through 1012) with 1425hp Allison V-1710F-17 engines ordered under AC-21217, one (c/n 1005) was completed in March, 1943 with the traditional wing intercoolers and the old-style cowlings and Prestone cooler scoops. This became the P-38H-1-LO, and a combined 600 -1-LO and -5-LO models were built from June-Dec., 1943.

Ten prototypes were designated P-38J-1-LO and became service test models for the new chin-mounted core intercoolers and new Prestone cooling scoops which were fatter in appearance but offered more effective cooling and less drag (the absence of these features in the P-38H limited the amount of power that could be safely used by its pilots). Series production commenced with a P-38J-5-LO in August, 1943 and wound up four models and 3159 planes later in November, 1944.

The remaining prototype from AC-21217 (cn 1004) was set up from the beginning to accomodate the Allison V-1710F-15 engine series and Hamilton-Standard Hydromatic props with high activity paddle blades and was designated P-38K-1-LO. Although the most high performance P-38 ever flown, it was also the only one built.

Oh, Hedy Lamar is a beautiful gal,
and Madeleine Carroll is too,
but you'l find if you query, a different theory
amonsgt any bomber crew
For the loveliest thing of which one could sing
(this side of the Pearly Gates)
Is no blonde or brunette of the Hollywood set
But an escort of p-38's

Yes in the days that have passed, when the tables were massed
With glasses of scotch and champagne
Yes it's true that the sight was once a thing to delight
Us, intent on feeling no pain.
But no longer the same, nowadays, in this game
When we head north from the Messina Straits
Take the sparkling wine- every time just make mine an escort of P-38's

Byron, Shelly, Keats run a dozen dead heats
Describing the view from the hills,
of the valleys in May when the winds gently sway
In the airs a different story;
We sweat out our track through fighter and flak
We're willing to split p the glory
Well, they wouldn't reject us so Heaven pretect us
and, until all the shooting abates,
Give us the courage to fight'em- and one other small item,
An escort of P-38's
