Steve Stith Minneapolis, MN | These Orions were painted after a high ranking Iranian officer saw an "aggressor" paint job on an A-4 at Moffet Field just prior to delivery. They rotated them one at a time over weekends to the factory so as to not interrupt the crew training schedule.
From what I've read about this, the Moffett Field air traffic controllers had a really hard time holding a visual on them even when they were in the traffic pattern so the paint did the job!
They were the only camoflaged P-3 variant. There have been all black P-3s, black and white, grey and white and all grey paint schemes over the years. Current US Navy models are gloss grey with hi-vis markings. 05/05/2006 @ 10:28 [ref: 13211] |
George Halstead Powder Springs, GA | The P-3F airplanes that were in Iran (1978-79), and I think the only F models made, were blue camouflage not green. 03/06/2006 @ 18:39 [ref: 12716] |
