I was stationed at Offutt AFB, NE as a member of the USAF 55th OMS,(SAC)from 1978 - 1981. I was a Crew Chief on CT-39A S/N 62-4457. I have fond memories of maintaining that aircraft. The Sabreliner was a great little aircraft and was very easy to maintain. I remember the aerodynamic slats and opening up the aft accessory compartment,(nick named the Hell Hole)to service the Hydraulic reservoir, accumlators or changing batteries. I received the Sabre Guard award in 1981 from Sabreliner.

I was the crew chief of a CT39A 62-4483. The leading edge of the wing cracked when a crew member jumped up on it to check the oil on the engine. Probabaly the best time in my life was fitting that leading edge back on with no leaks and putting that plane back together again. Sure wish I knew what happened to that bird.

I crewed (and flew with) 62-0163 at Offutt AFB, '74-'76. My Bird was assigned to the CINCSAC, Gen. Russell Daugherty. We were away from home (off and on) with the General and members of his staff, almost 9 months of the year. Maintaining this aircraft was an absolute breeze, although the port engine had a nasty habit of eating the starter/generator every now and then. 62-0163 was the only T-39A assigned to Offutt equipped with on-board weather radar and a Crew Chief jump seat (folded dwn. from starboard wall and poitioned between flight crew), as well as being the most lavishly appointed aircraft - all for the CINCSAC, of course. She always got great reviews where ever we landed.

I just uploaded 2 pictures of a Marine Corps CT-39G. I was a Crew Chief on this aircraft from Oct. 1978 until Nov. 1979 at the Naval Air Facility (NAF) on Kadena AFB in Okinawa. I actually wore many hats in the maintenance department for our lone Saberliner. Our entire maintenance department consisted of 1 Aircraft Maintenance Officer, one logs and records clerk and 12 maintenance personnel, we also had a Tech. Rep. and a Supply Rep. from North American/Rockwell. I was the Assistant Maintenance Officer, Senior Maintenance Controller, Quality Assurance Cheif, Airframes Chief, Assistant NCOIC, Senior Plane Captain and Senior Crew Chief. It was a great duty assignment and I really enjoyed getting to know all aspects of the T-39's maintenance. I made some very interesting trips around the Far East, taking the Marine Corps Generals where ever they needed to go. I found out that most of the generals were really nice people, but don't upset their aides. It was the only time in my 20 years in the Corps that when the 14 day wash job came due, it was more like washing the family car then taking care of an aircraft. Every 14 days we would wash the aircraft and then dry it with lint free cloths, then we broke out the turtle wax and metal polish. All painted surfaces got turtle waxed and the bare metal on the leading edges would get polished to a high shine. It was a great looking aircraft.

I was a Crew Chief On the T-39B Tail # 60-3476 stationed at The AFFTC, Edwards AFB From 93-95. I love working on that old girl. Biggest problem was the hydr systems. and getting that damn hatch shut.

belived or not t-39A still flying like new
i work in a cargo company in san luis potosi, mexico and we have 12 airplanes and we fly about 5 to 7 hours daily each airplane so it is a big operation and the t-39 still a reliable airplane
i been flying sabreliners since 1980 and i like it more and more every day.
