I served in the Aero Repair Unit of the 48th FBW, Chaumont, France. (1956-1958) Our wing lost a number of F-100-Ds due to engine bearing failures possibly caused by faulty CSD units and False fire warning triggers due to rain water contamination of the fire warning system cannon plugs at the fuselage split line. We also saw several Ds damaged beyond repair due to runway accidents (drag chute failures, blown tires, short landings etc) I recall only one fatal accident which occurred during F-100 transition training in Morocco.

I worked on the C/D models at torrejon AB, Madrid Spain while in the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing. I was a J57 jet engine mechanic. I remember the most fun thing to do was to "reshape" the cages for the afterburner nozzle. I was also an engine crew leader, and worked the test cell.

Marvin from Kingman,

Not sure if it is the real 281 or just painted like her, but 54-2281 is on static display in Glendale AZ at Harry Bonsall park. Here is the google satellite of her.

I was a Crew Chief on an F-100D ( 55-2817 ) with the 493rd Tac Fighter Squadron at Lakenheath England. I looked up the history of my aircraft to see where it is today and found out the it had crashed shortly after I left in 1969. I would love to find our squadron commander( Col. Carl Brunson ) again and talk to him about old times.

I crewed on an F100D #54-2281 and several others at Nellis AFB from June 1960 to Dec 1962. FW 281 was an old retired Thunderbird which was put back into regular use with the 25th Fighter Weapons School at Nellis. When I started duty at Nellis, FW281 still didn't have the guns, gun camers or ammo cans installed. They had been removed to make the bird lighter for use as a Thunderbird. It wasn't long though until all the equipment had been reinstalled. I really liked the F100D, a good plane. I wes transfered to Yokota AB Japan to crew on the B57 in Jan of 1963, I took that as an insult, having been the crew chief on an F100, checked out to taxi them, then be assigned to those slow, clumsy B57's and hardly even be alowed in the cockpit. I have no idea what happened to my bird, 54-2281. It was probably sent to scrap in Tocsan AZ, or as a drone. I doubt it ever saw service in Viet Nam. I seperated from active duty in Jan 64, shortly before all the B57s at Yokota were reassiggned to the war effort in Viet Nam.

Several people asked about there F100 and what happen to them. Here are a coupleanswers.
56-3255 destroyed QF245 Tyndall on 24 Jan 1989 AIMN12 Missile.
56-3937 to France Preserved.
56-3248 destroyed QF224 27 Mar 1988 Holloman AFB
QF 291 was 56-3141 assigned to 522 TFS at Cannon AFB at one time. Last flown by 107 TFS Mich ANG before storage at Davis Monthan Mar 1979 then to Mojave for Drone conversion May 87 as QF 291 target drone. It was hit by a missile at Holloman AFB NM made a forced landing and was W/O 22 Feb 1988. Panes of Fame acquired the acft and was dismantled and moved to Marana Az by truck. From there it was later moved to Chino Calif and put back together missing some parts and damage to the verticial and horiztional stablizers and engine bay where missile explosed. The acft long time out look unknow would assume Planes of fame will atemp to restore it. If any body would like to know about there F100 that they crewed or Flew feel free to contact me at bandit830@hotmail.com

I was a Crew Chief on F-100D 56-3248 at Ramstein AFB in Germany (417th TFS, 50th TFW) from 1962 to June 1964. It was a great time in my life. Note to Ralph (who made a comment about a hearing problem). I am collecting VA disability for severe tinnitus (ringing in the ears). The VA admitted that my service in the Air Force "could" have caused my problem and therefore awarded me disability. Mayo Clinic confirmed my tinnitus and possible cause.

I WAS THE CREW CHIEF ON A F 100D IN THE P.I. FROM 1957 TO 1958. I WAS IN THE 12TH FIGHTER BOMBER SQ. I HAVE A SEVER HEARING PROBLEM THAT I FEEL CAME FROM THE LOUD NOISE THAT I WAS EXPOSED TO. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INFORMATION RELATING TO THE DB NOISE OF THE J 57 IN FULL AFTER BURNER.
