I have seen other F4U-5N that did not have radomes. Maybe they just removed them since they were no longer needed.

I was ground crew (Plane Captain) on one of these for most of 1949 at NAS Atlantic City. Somebody correct me of I'm wrong, but the N designation was what defined it as a night fighter and it was a night fighter because it had radar. Therefore, the pictures of Corsairs in this site of planes without radomes on the starboard wing cannot be F4U-5N's.

For everyone looking for information on specific airframes via serial numbers... If you visit the website www.aerofiles.com , there is a section (you may have to look a bit) which lists just about every single aircraft to enter service with the armed forces, listed by serial numbers, and their fate. I hope that this helps some.

Wondering how to trace what might have happened to a particular plane?

The Argentine F4U-5N's were not lend lease, they were purchased by the Argentine Navy. Had it been lend-lease, the U.S. Navy would have laid claim to it immediately upon its arrival in the U.S. The Navy does not relinguish title to a plane unless it was sold for cash.

Hi, I have submitted three pics of an F4U ? that was in the RNZAF Museum storage and restoration facility in Christchurch New Zealand in 1992. I took a special interest in it because of the differences between it and the F4U that was then currently flying in N.Z. :- a. 20mm cannon. b. Exhaust shields. c. Rear fin antennae. d. Cowling arrangement. I believe that this aircraft had been accepted by the Museum in return for the use of some of its contents in a Disney movie. The Museum decided not to use this particular aircraft in any of its' displays as it was not not representative of the types operated by the RNZAF in the Pacific Theatre during WWII and the occupation of Japan (F4U-1 and FG1D). This aircraft has since been shipped overseas somewhere.
